Tianjin Binhai New Area Explosion Self Rescue Manual teaches you how to save yourself

At 11 o'clock on the evening of August 12, a violent explosion made it difficult for the people of Tianjin to fall asleep. According to media reports, the explosion occurred at a container terminal at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Yuejin Road, Binhai New District, Tianjin, where flammable and explosive items were placed in the container. There were multiple explosions at the scene, and the fire was skyrocketing. The media claimed that the two explosions were as powerful as 24 tons of TNT explosive.

Teda Hospital, which is only 3 kilometers away from the explosion site, has treated more than 500 wounded people. Many firefighters have been killed and many firefighters are still out of contact. It is understood that the injured are mainly burns, trauma and aspiration pneumonia.

In the face of sudden explosions, we are not completely helpless. There are many emergency measures that can help us reduce injuries. Here we compile and organize the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emergency guidelines. I hope everyone is safe.

1. When an unknown explosion occurs and may be accompanied by chemical leakage:

If possible, determine the location of the explosion and possible chemical leak as soon as possible.

Immediately stay away from the explosion / leak area!

If something falls around you, drill under a sturdy dining table or desk. When you stop falling, leave quickly, and beware of obviously unstable floors and stairs. When evacuating from the building, be careful of the debris that falls.

Do not stand in front of windows, glass doors or other potentially hazardous areas.

Allow sidewalks or streets to be used by emergency personnel or others who have not yet evacuated.

2. If an explosion / leakage occurs in your building, you should:

Leave as soon as possible, but avoid the contaminated area.

If there is smoke, lower your body. Don't stop back to pick up personal belongings or call.

Do not use elevators.

If you ca n’t leave the building, or ca n’t pass through the explosion area, look for the place as far away as possible from the explosion area, and then take protective measures on the spot.

3. If you were outdoors when the explosion occurred, you should:

Calculate how to find fresh air as quickly as possible. Decide whether you should escape as soon as possible or enter the nearest building to protect it in situ.

If you choose to escape, determine the direction of the wind, and immediately move upwind of the explosion.

If you are trapped in the rubble, you should:

If possible, signal the rescuers with a flashlight to tell you where you are.

Tap on pipes or walls so that rescuers can find your location.

If possible, whistle to signal rescuers.

Don't shout until you have a last resort. When you yell, you are inhaling dangerous amounts of dust.

Avoid unnecessary movement so that you will not stir up the dust.

Cover the nose and mouth with anything at hand. (Dense woven cotton is very good for filtering. Try to breathe through this material.)

4. If you are notified to stay at home, or decide to protect in place for other reasons:

Use all known information and your common sense to determine when you need to escape and when you should take local protective measures.

If family and pets are around, make sure they enter the house together.

Lock doors, close windows, close vents and fireplaces.

Turn off the fan and air conditioner.

Hide in the inside room with as few windows as possible.

Bring your emergency reserve materials.

Seal all doors, windows and vents with 2-4 mm thick plastic paper and adhesive tape. Plastic paper can be cut in advance to save time.

When using adhesive tape, stick to the corner first, and then seal the edge.

The local government may not be able to provide emergency response information immediately. But you should still pay attention to TV, radio and the Internet, and stay informed.
