The strict scripture

In May, three new employees joined the Yunnan Power Transmission Bureau in Qujing, Yunnan. However, during their first week, they were rarely seen around the office. Yao Yongwang, the department’s secretary, was puzzled. Were these newcomers avoiding their tasks? He soon discovered that all three had been assigned to Yan Guangqiang, the team leader of the third shift, who was known as “the ghost.” Yan Guangqiang, a provincial model worker, noticed that the three new hires lacked both experience and confidence. Determined to help them grow, he took them to the Delixi training center for hands-on skills development. While other mentors were already guiding them, Yan insisted on personally teaching them, aiming to make them independent as quickly as possible. Known for his strict nature, Yan has long followed a “strict scripture” in his work. His dedication and meticulous approach have earned praise from both colleagues and leaders. This same rigor was applied during the training. The session covered essential safety procedures—such as using seat belts, buckles, and climbing boards—as well as daily operations like preventing high-altitude falls. Under the scorching sun, Yan guided each movement, ensuring every action was precise and safe. During the training, Yan also used real materials to teach the new employees how to wind pre-twisted wires. He even repaired damaged strands on-site, ensuring future training would be safe and effective. “Small issues are often overlooked,” said Wang Kehong, who trained alongside Yan. “But strict role models always pay attention to these tiny details.” Thanks to Yan’s rigorous training, 90% of the 9-member class became senior engineers, with three technicians and one Southern Power Grid expert among them. The team has been recognized as a “four-star” unit in Qujing and an outstanding QC team nationally. Every trainee carried forward Yan’s disciplined and practical spirit, now excelling in their respective roles. Beyond training, Yan maintained the same strict standards in daily work. For over 20 years, his team ensured that all poles and towers remained in top condition, with no lapses in responsibility. Despite a physical limitation, he never let it affect his performance. After each new line was completed, he meticulously checked every base, screw, and tower. At the top of each pole, he inspected wires and fittings to eliminate any potential hazards. Once, as the leader of the 110kV Jiantian I and II line construction project, Yan managed a tight schedule and challenging conditions. Within 147 days, his team set a new benchmark for power transmission projects in Qujing. In 2013, during an insulator replacement at Rodin I, he injured his foot but continued working without hesitation. His determination inspired the team to complete the task efficiently ahead of schedule. Yan’s unwavering commitment and discipline continue to shape the culture of the team, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence and safety in the power industry.
