**Occupational Diseases and Prevention: A Comprehensive Overview**
From April 24 to May 1, it is celebrated as the "Professional Disease Prevention and Propagation Week." According to statistics from the Yunnan Provincial Department of Health in 2013, there were 5 cases out of 438 newly reported instances of acute and chronic occupational diseases. Among these, 424 cases were pneumoconiosis, accounting for 96.8% of all cases. Pneumoconiosis remains the most prevalent occupational disease in the region. The top five affected areas were Zhaotong, Qujing, Chuxiong, Kunming, and Yuxi, with the majority occurring in coal and non-ferrous metal industries. Acute poisoning has the highest mortality rate among all occupational diseases.
In China, statutory occupational diseases include ten categories such as pneumoconiosis, occupational radiation diseases, occupational poisoning, and others, totaling 132 types. In Yunnan, silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis are the most common forms of pneumoconiosis. Occupational poisoning often involves substances like lead, arsenic, mercury, and carbon monoxide. Noise-induced hearing loss is also a significant issue in occupational ENT diseases.
Pneumoconiosis is a systemic illness caused by inhaling dust particles during work, leading to lung fibrosis. Symptoms include chest tightness, breathing difficulties, coughing, and even severe loss of work capacity. It typically affects environments with high dust levels and poor protective measures, such as mines and cement plants. The disease is classified into stages based on diagnostic criteria.
To prevent dust-related illnesses, employers should improve workplace conditions, reduce dust exposure, and ensure the use of proper masks. Workers must wear masks correctly, avoid using them in toxic environments, and replace filters regularly. These steps are essential in minimizing health risks.
Occupational poisoning occurs when workers are exposed to industrial toxins, such as metals or chemicals. It can be categorized into metal, non-metal, and organic chemical poisoning. Common examples include arsine and hydrogen sulfide poisoning. Prevention involves engineering controls, regular monitoring, and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Lead poisoning is common among workers in industries like battery manufacturing, painting, and welding. Symptoms may include weakness, abdominal pain, and anemia. Similarly, arsenic poisoning can result from inhaling arsine gas, leading to severe hemolysis and kidney failure.
Occupational ENT diseases, though less common, are primarily linked to noise exposure. Long-term noise can cause irreversible hearing damage and affect other systems like the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Preventive measures include using ear protection and undergoing regular hearing tests.
Many people still have misconceptions about occupational diseases due to limited awareness. This lack of understanding can hinder both employees and employers from protecting their rights. There is a growing need for more education and better access to occupational health services.
In many countries, occupational health checks are mandatory, but in China, they are voluntary, which leads to resistance or confusion among workers. It's important to recognize that these exams differ from regular checkups, as they focus on specific occupational hazards.
Companies play a critical role in ensuring worker safety by following legal guidelines, conducting regular health assessments, and maintaining comprehensive medical records. It’s recommended that major companies partner with certified hospitals for occupational health exams to build accurate and reliable health records.
