How to Trim and Shape Geraniums:
After the summer heat subsides and temperatures begin to cool, geraniums start to recover from their dormant phase. New growth begins to appear, making this the ideal time for pruning and shaping. Typically, this occurs between late August and early September, when it's best to combine pruning with repotting to encourage healthy development.
When trimming, select 3 to 5 main branches that are strong and well-proportioned, keeping them close to the base. Remove any weak, thin, or overly long shoots at the base. Then, shorten the main branches and side branches, leaving only strong, healthy buds on each side branch. This helps create a balanced, compact structure, resulting in a full and bushy appearance.
For plants that have been grown for one year, you can cut back the stems at suitable points to maintain shape and promote branching. After pruning, the plant will need some time to recover. Usually, after the cut ends have dried for about two weeks, you can resume regular fertilization. This encourages new growth and continuous blooming. To prevent leggy growth, consider topping the plant to stimulate more lateral flowering and a fuller, more attractive form.
