Method of trimming and shaping geranium

How to Trim and Shape Geraniums:

As the weather cools down after summer, geraniums begin to recover from their dormant phase. New growth starts to appear, making it the ideal time for pruning. This usually happens between late August and early September, when you should combine trimming with repotting to ensure healthy development.

When trimming, select 3–5 main branches that are strong and well-proportioned, leaving them close to the base. Remove any weak, thin, or overly long branches completely from the base. Then, cut back the main and side branches, leaving only strong, healthy buds on each side branch. This helps create a balanced, compact structure, resulting in a full and bushy plant shape.

For plants that have been grown for one year, you can perform selective shortening at appropriate points. After pruning, the plant may take some time to recover. Typically, wait about two weeks until the cut areas dry out before resuming regular fertilization. This encourages continuous new growth and blooming. To prevent the stems from becoming too long, consider topping the plant, which promotes more lateral branches and multiple flowering periods throughout the season.
