The new role of gibberellin on tomato

Gibberellin is a well-known plant growth regulator with multiple functions, including promoting stem elongation, reducing the toxicity of paclobutrazol, breaking seed dormancy, stimulating germination, encouraging flowering and fruit set, and accelerating early ripening. In agricultural practices, it's also used to prevent tomato cracking, according to the **Pesticide Network**. Tomato cracking is a common issue that occurs during autumn and can significantly impact yield, causing great concern for farmers. While measures such as proper water and fertilizer management, along with environmental control in greenhouses, are important, there has been a lack of effective products to prevent this problem. As a result, cracking has become a major challenge in tomato cultivation. After extensive research, Liu Ruiqiang discovered that applying gibberellin at concentrations of 20×10⁻⁶ to 30×10⁻⁶ can effectively reduce the occurrence of cracked tomatoes. The best time to spray is on the top of the tomato plant, specifically on the seventh spike, when the fruit is about the size of a bean. It’s not recommended to spray during the flowering stage, as this may lead to poor fruit setting or excessive plant elongation. At this stage, the tomato is in the color change period, and the middle fruits are in the expansion phase. Spraying gibberellin helps stretch the pericarp cells and promote the development of the fruit skin, thereby preventing cracks. However, the concentration must be carefully controlled. If the concentration is too high, it can cause hollow fruits, which negatively affect yield and profitability. Typically, if the temperature inside the greenhouse exceeds 25°C, a concentration of 20×10⁻⁶ is sufficient. When the temperature is below 25°C, the concentration should be slightly increased, ranging from 25×10⁻⁶ to 30×10⁻⁶. According to **China’s Pesticide Network**, different tomato varieties may require different concentrations. It is advisable to conduct a small-scale test before applying the solution widely to ensure effectiveness and safety.
