In agricultural practices, many fruit farmers traditionally remove the fallen leaves from their orchards and take them outside the park, aiming to reduce the likelihood of pests and diseases in the following year. However, this approach has its limitations. A more effective method would be to combine leaf removal with fertilization, allowing the collected leaves to be directly incorporated into the soil for better nutrient recycling.
Even if some leaves are already damaged by pests or diseases, burying them in the soil along with proper fertilization can help eliminate these pathogens, preventing them from spreading further. Moreover, leaves are rich in essential nutrients that support the growth of fruit trees. They contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and various trace elements, which can significantly enhance soil fertility when properly managed.
According to research, apple leaves typically contain 3–6% nitrogen, 0.2–0.3% phosphorus, and 2% potassium, along with other trace elements. Pear leaves, on the other hand, have about 2–2.2% nitrogen, 0.1–0.25% phosphorus, and 1.2–2.6% potassium. After the fruiting season, the total nitrogen content in all the leaves of a pear orchard is equivalent to approximately 98 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, 12 kg of superphosphate, and 20 kg of potassium carbonate. These nutrients can provide a valuable source of nourishment for fruit trees.
Additionally, using fallen leaves as organic fertilizer helps improve soil structure, increase organic matter, enhance aeration, and improve water retention and nutrient-holding capacity. It also helps regulate soil pH, creating a more favorable environment for plant growth.
Therefore, there's no need to completely remove the leaves from the garden. When used correctly, they can serve as an excellent on-site organic fertilizer. However, it is important to mix them thoroughly into the soil through deep plowing to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
By adopting this practice, farmers can not only save time and labor but also promote sustainable and eco-friendly farming methods. This approach supports long-term soil health and reduces dependency on chemical fertilizers, making it a win-win solution for both the environment and agricultural productivity.
