On July 3, Li Chao, director of the Yellow River Authority in Dongping, visited the Yamenliu Branch Control Project to encourage young workers who are actively involved in flood control efforts. He praised their detailed and thorough work, saying, “The flood records you fill out are very comprehensive. You must keep this attitude in your future work, whether or not you're on duty.â€
One of the young workers he met was Zhang Yuqing, born in 1989. Although he joined the team last year, this was his first time participating in the flood season. He shared that he used to hear about his father's responsibilities during the flood season, but now he truly understands how challenging it is. However, he doesn’t see the hardships as something shameful. His father recently retired from the administrative department of a beauties shop, and Yuqing took over his father’s role, continuing the family legacy of serving the Yellow River.
On June 28, Yuqing’s section held a mobilization meeting for flood defense. Besides one person staying at the office, all others were deployed along the riverbank. From then on, he and his colleagues lived and worked on the banks around the clock, conducting patrols, monitoring water levels, and keeping detailed records.
Yuqing and three other colleagues were assigned to the Yamenliu Branch Control Project, covering a 3,213-meter stretch with 37 dam heads. During the critical flood season, he understood the importance of his role. Each patrol took over an hour, and they conducted at least three inspections daily. The team rotated shifts, working two-hour shifts in the water regime. Despite the heat and monotony, Yuqing said it was manageable—until nightfall.
At night, the situation became more dangerous. The embankments were dark, and mosquitoes swarmed around them. The ground was slippery, making every step a potential risk. They always carried safety gear: life jackets, ropes, flashlights, and anti-slip shoes. Two people were always on the front lines, ensuring the safety of the riverbanks.
When checking the water level, one person would read the gauge while another recorded the data, ensuring accuracy down to two decimal places. “Don’t underestimate these numbers,†Yuqing said. “They play a crucial role in flood control decisions. We have to be precise.†His pride in his work was evident.
During patrols, they often encountered villagers who tried to dry garlic on the embankment or set up cooling areas. They had to politely remind them that such activities were strictly prohibited. Sometimes, the villagers would complain, “We thought you were gone!†These situations happened multiple times a day. They also warned people near the river, especially parents with children, to avoid swimming or fishing to prevent accidents.
“Every day, I feel like I’m repeating the same thing over and over,†Yuqing joked. “It feels like a blind man smoking!†But despite the challenges, he felt deeply committed to his job.
When asked if he would choose this career again, he didn’t hesitate: “Yes.†For him, the Yellow River was his father’s lifelong dream, and he wanted to carry it forward with dedication and hard work. His face showed the determination and responsibility of a young worker. There are many like him in the Dongping Yellow River area, continuing their fathers’ dreams with loyalty and passion. The Yellow River has found new strength and energy through the youth.
