Analysis: This year's lock core or determine the level of anti-theft performance

In a recent demonstration, a professional locksmith showed how quickly a standard door lock can be opened using technical methods. The process, which takes only a few seconds, highlights the importance of lock security. A few days ago, I met Chen Wei, a licensed locksmith with 110 emergency unlocking qualifications, at Yunnan North Road in Gulou District. Chen Wei and his assistant, Chen Daochun, demonstrated two different techniques. First, Chen Daochun used a tin foil method to open an ordinary lock. He inserted a thin strip of tin into the lock cylinder and moved it up and down. After trying two pieces of tin, he used a third one and successfully opened the lock in about three minutes. Next, Chen Wei demonstrated the use of a specialized tool, similar to a "ear spoon," which allowed him to unlock the lock in just a few seconds. “These are A-level locks commonly found in homes,” Chen explained. “Some have a key with a single shape, others with a cross shape.” He added that A-level and B-level locks are relatively easy to pick, often opening within a few seconds or minutes. Police officials advise people to choose Super B-class locks for better security. According to the police, most household locks in Nanjing fall into three categories: A, B, and Super B. About 70% of locks are A-level, which are widely used but not very secure. Skilled professionals can open them in just a few seconds. B-level locks are more difficult to crack, usually taking 5–10 minutes. Super B-class locks, on the other hand, are much more secure. Their key has two rows of blades, and their lock cylinders are designed with steel plates to prevent forced entry. Even experts take at least an hour to open them. Currently, only about 10% of people use Super B-class locks. “Locksmiths across the country are trying to find ways to open them, but no one has succeeded so far,” said Chen. While Super B-class locks are more expensive—priced around 300–400 yuan compared to 100–200 yuan for A and B models—they offer significantly better protection. Police recommend that the public install Super B-class locks to improve home security and make it harder for thieves to gain entry. In addition to traditional locks, there are high-end options like fingerprint, password, and iris locks. These smart locks are convenient but may not always be more secure. As Chen Wei explained, the anti-theft performance of these locks still depends on the quality of the lock cylinder. “Even if you use an iris lock, if it has an A-level cylinder, it’s still vulnerable to technical unlocking,” he said. In conclusion, while modern technology offers convenience, the core of a secure lock remains its internal mechanism. Choosing the right type of lock is essential for protecting your home and belongings.
