Scientists Develop Nanogels that Accelerate Healing of Skin Burns

Second- and third-degree burns are particularly challenging due to their depth, affecting the lower layers of the skin. This often leads to prolonged healing times, which not only increase patient discomfort but also raise the risk of infections and scarring. While there are various medications available to manage pain and prevent infections, no effective treatment has been developed to significantly speed up the healing process. However, a breakthrough is now on the horizon.

A team from A*STAR’s Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) has created a groundbreaking nanogel treatment designed to accelerate the recovery of burn wounds. The technology is based on the institute's proprietary self-assembling ultrashort peptide system. These short chains of amino acids automatically form nanofibers when mixed with water, creating a gel-like structure that is both breathable and highly moisturizing.

This innovative gel acts as a supportive scaffold for skin cells, promoting faster regeneration and repair. Importantly, the ultra-short peptides used in the formulation are non-toxic and do not trigger an immune response, making them ideal for medical use. The IBN research team believes this method is far more efficient than traditional silicone-based wound dressings.

In animal trials, the nanogel demonstrated remarkable results—100% of wounds healed within just two weeks, compared to the 2–10 weeks typically required with conventional treatments. Traditional silica gel dressings only managed to heal about 63% of the affected area. Dr. Charlotte Hauser, a senior research scientist and project manager at IBN, emphasized the potential of this technology: “We are excited about developing a bioactive gel that can enhance skin regeneration. This innovation could also pave the way for artificial skin solutions and improved care for deeper burns.”

As researchers continue to refine this approach, it holds great promise for revolutionizing burn treatment and improving patient outcomes worldwide.
