Mahogany furniture has gained widespread popularity among consumers due to its solid and durable materials, and its price has risen significantly in recent years. However, many people remain confused about what exactly qualifies as mahogany furniture. According to professionals, the term "redwood" is often used loosely, and not all so-called redwoods are actually red.
He Rui, a senior engineer from the Yunnan Provincial Forestry Department, explained that there is no naturally occurring species called "redwood." The term "mahogany furniture" originated during the Tang Dynasty. At that time, furniture was made from a material known as "Zhuhong," which was later referred to as "Dahong" and "Zhuzhu," eventually leading to the name "mahogany."
In modern times, the concept of mahogany furniture goes beyond just the material—it also includes traditional craftsmanship and cultural significance. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, seven types of wood have been traditionally classified as redwood, including rosewood, sandalwood, fragrant wood, black rosewood, red rosewood, ebony, and wenge, all of which are native to Southeast Asia. However, these woods vary in color—Hainan huanghuali, for example, is yellow, while ebony is black.
After 2000, the Redwood National Standard categorized 5 main categories, 8 subcategories, and 33 types of wood under the umbrella of "redwood." In addition to the previously mentioned seven types, striped ebony—such as Sulawesi and Philippine ebony—is also included. Despite this classification, there remains significant variation in how the industry defines mahogany. Some believe only rosewood qualifies as mahogany, while others argue that sandalwood rosewood and huanghuali should be considered above mahogany. Others feel that the national standard excludes many woods that should be included, and some insist that only the seven types from Southeast Asia can truly be called mahogany.
This lack of consensus continues to create confusion among both consumers and industry professionals, highlighting the need for clearer definitions and better education around what constitutes authentic mahogany furniture.
