Japan Masters Controlling Plant Stomatal Opening Techniques

The Nagoya University of Japan issued a communiqué on the 24th, saying that its research team, led by Prof. Dr. Kinoshita, expanded the pores on the epidermis of plants through genetic manipulations, so that plants can absorb more carbon dioxide, enhance photosynthesis, and increase plant output.

During the photosynthesis process, the photoreceptors of the plant epidermis guard cells receive sunlight and activate the enzyme called "proton pump" in the cell membrane. As a result, the guard cells begin to absorb potassium from the outside, the osmotic pressure rises, water inflows, and the guard cells expand, so the stomata opens.

The researchers performed genetic manipulation on Arabidopsis thaliana to increase the number of "proton pumps" in its guard cells to 1.5 times the original. After irradiation with light, the open area of the pores was 25% larger than usual, and the amount of photosynthesis increased by 15%.

They found that Arabidopsis thaliana cultivated at the same level of temperature, moisture and light in the room, 25 days after sowing, the size and number of modified Arabidopsis leaves are more than normal, the total weight of the ground part of the leaves increased by about 4 to 60% . After 45 days, the flowers and seeds of Arabidopsis thaliana also increased, about three to 40 percent more than usual.

Dr. Kinoshita, who led the research, said that this is the first technology in the world to control the stomatal opening of plants, which will help increase crop yields, expand biofuel production, and contribute to carbon dioxide emission reduction. (Reporter Lan Jianzhong)
