When citrus and grapefruit trees suffer from resin disease, the consequences can be severe—plants may even die. Many fruit farmers face significant financial losses due to delayed or improper pesticide application. Today, the **Chinese Pesticide Net** shares some essential tips to help prevent and manage citrus and grapefruit resin disease.

Citrus resin disease, also known as smut or rot, primarily affects citrus crops. Yuzu resin disease specifically damages the fruit, causing it to develop a sand-like texture. This disease is widespread across various citrus and grapefruit-producing regions in China. Once infected, the tree may show symptoms such as withered leaves or even complete plant death. The affected branches often exude a resinous substance, which can be classified into two types: gel-like and dry.
The **gel-type** infection appears as gray-brown, water-soaked lesions on the affected area. The tissue becomes soft, and small cracks may appear in the bark. Over time, a brown resin forms, and the outer bark becomes dry or necrotic, exposing the xylem. On the other hand, the **dry-type** symptoms begin with reddish-brown, sunken, and cracked bark that doesn’t easily fall off. If the fruit is infected, dark brown, hard protrusions form on the surface, resembling sand. The fruit's core rots faster than the peel. When the peel is about one-third to half rotten, the core is already completely decayed—a condition referred to as "heart rot." This same issue can also affect grapefruits, with similar symptoms.
To control the disease, the following **pesticide** formulas are recommended:
- In early spring, just before bud emergence, spray a 0.8:0.8:100 Bordeaux mixture. Be sure to cover the trunk and main branches.
- After the disease occurs, carefully remove the infected parts. Apply the following solutions to the wounds:
- 36% Thiophanate-methyl suspension diluted 100 times
- 50% Benomyl WP diluted 200 times
- 25% Metalaxyl WP diluted 100–200 times
- 25% Triethylphosphinate Aluminum wettable powder diluted 100 times
It’s best to wrap the treated wound with clear, transparent vinyl film to enhance the protective effect. If needed, combine this treatment with prevention of anthracnose and scab by spraying the following at the early stage of infection:
- 50% Benomyl WP diluted 1000–1500 times
- 50% Thiophanate-sulfur suspension diluted 500–600 times
- 80% Mancozeb wettable powder diluted 400–600 times
During the application process, always follow the recommended dosage to avoid **phytotoxicity**.
