In June, China's railway system transported a total of 182 million tons of coal, marking an increase of 3.96 million tons compared to the same period last year, or a 2.2% rise. Among this, thermal coal shipments reached 127 million tons, up by 660,000 tons, reflecting a 0.5% growth.
Looking at the broader picture from January to June, the total coal transported by rail came to 1.137 billion tons, a decrease of 30.82 million tons compared to the same period in 2023, representing a 2.6% drop. Specifically, thermal coal shipments fell by 35.9 million tons, down 4.3% year-on-year.
Despite the overall decline, certain key coal transportation routes showed positive trends. The Datong-Qinhuangdao Line, one of the country's primary coal corridors, transported 220 million tons during the first half of the year, a 2.2% increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the Houyue Line transported 90.44 million tons, up 3% year-on-year.
