Yuan Longping: Super rice has a yield of 1,000 kilograms per mu or it can be raised in advance to support more than one Hunan province

According to a recent report by "Yangguang News" from the Voice of China, renowned Chinese agricultural scientist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yuan Longping, revealed that the fourth phase of China's super hybrid rice research might be completed three years ahead of schedule. This breakthrough could lead to yields exceeding 1,000 kilograms per mu, significantly boosting food security across the nation.

Speaking at the "Climate Change China Walks into Hunan" event organized by the China Meteorological Administration, Yuan emphasized that the new super hybrid rice varieties, which were initially expected to take 5 to 8 years to develop, are now on track for completion within just three years. The fourth phase of the project officially began this month, with eight trial sites set up nationwide. Three or four of these varieties will be tested in Hainan, where early results have already reached over 900 kg per mu. Due to the longer growth period and greater temperature variations in Hunan, it is anticipated that yields there could surpass 1,000 kg per mu.

Yuan explained that in Hainan, the growing season lasts about 130 days, while in Hunan, it takes around 150 days, giving an additional 20 days for development. In Sanya, the yield is currently 900 kg per mu, but there's strong potential to reach 1,000 kg in Hunan.

With 250 million mu of hybrid rice currently cultivated in China, the average yield stands at around 500 kg per mu. From the first to the fourth stage of super rice development, each technological advancement has marked a significant leap in productivity and efficiency.

Yuan noted that during the third phase, they achieved 900 kg per mu. If this variety were to be promoted across 150 million mu, it could feed an additional 70 million people—equivalent to the population of Hunan province. With the fourth-generation super rice, he believes the impact will be even greater, potentially reaching an average of 700 kg per mu over a large area.

He also stressed that achieving such high yields requires more than just good seeds. It also depends on proper farming techniques, fertile soil, and well-maintained infrastructure. Favorable climatic conditions play a crucial role, and with current favorable circumstances, it is highly likely that large areas of hybrid rice will soon exceed 1,000 kg per mu.

Yuan concluded with optimism, stating that there has been significant progress in the development of super hybrid rice, and the pace of innovation is accelerating rapidly. He expressed confidence that his dream of feeding millions through high-yield rice will soon become a reality.
