Yuan Longping: Super rice has a yield of 1,000 kilograms per mu or it can be raised in advance to support more than one Hunan province

According to a report from "Yangguang News" on the Voice of China, renowned Chinese agricultural scientist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yuan Longping, recently revealed that the fourth phase of China's super hybrid rice research may be completed three years ahead of schedule. This project is expected to achieve yields of over 1,000 kilograms per mu, significantly boosting food production. The new rice varieties are anticipated to support more than 70 million people—equivalent to the population of an entire Hunan province.

During an event titled "Climate Change China Walks into Hunan," organized by the China Meteorological Administration, Yuan Longping shared details about the progress of the super hybrid rice program. Originally planned for a 5- to 8-year timeline, the new high-yield rice varieties capable of producing over 1,000 kg per mu are now expected to be developed within just three years. The fourth phase of this research officially began earlier this month, with eight trial sites set up nationwide. Among them, three to four varieties will be tested in Hainan, where early results have already reached 900 kg per mu. Due to longer growth periods and greater temperature variations in Hunan, the yield there could surpass 1,000 kg per mu.

Yuan Longping explained that in Hainan, the growing season lasts only 130 days, while in Hunan it extends to 150 days—a 20-day difference. While Sanya has already achieved 900 kg per mu, he believes there is strong potential for reaching 1,000 kg in Hunan. He emphasized the importance of favorable climatic conditions, good soil quality, and advanced farming techniques in achieving these high yields.

Currently, China cultivates 250 million mu of hybrid rice, with an average yield of around 500 kg per mu. From the first to the fourth stage of super rice development, each breakthrough has marked a significant leap in productivity. In the third stage, the target of 900 kg per mu was successfully achieved. If this variety were to be widely adopted across 150 million mu, it would provide enough food for an additional 70 million people—roughly the population of Hunan province. With the fourth stage, the goal is even higher, aiming for an average of 700 kg per mu across large areas.

Yuan Longping stressed that achieving such high yields requires not only superior rice varieties but also proper farming methods, fertile land, and well-maintained facilities. He noted that the current favorable climate conditions make it highly likely that large-scale rice fields will soon exceed 1,000 kg per mu. He expressed optimism about the rapid progress being made and said, “There is new progress, and the pace is very fast. My dream will soon come true.”
