Furniture purchases are reaching a peak season as the year comes to an end. The Guangzhou Industrial and Commercial Bureau recently announced that 24 types of wooden furniture failed quality inspections. Among these, four batches of wooden furniture, including Heming Westwaite's dining tables, were found to emit excessive formaldehyde levels, which can be harmful to health.
The Guangzhou Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce conducted a quality check on wooden furniture in circulation across the city. A total of 66 samples from 51 manufacturers were tested, with 42 passing and 24 failing, resulting in a failure rate of 36.36%. The main issues included high formaldehyde emissions, incomplete instructions, and structural instability. After excluding samples with incomplete product descriptions, the qualified rate rose to 89.4%, while 10.6% of the samples had physical quality defects.
According to the national standard GB 5296.6-2004, furniture must come with detailed instructions outlining the model name, usage scope, and applicable standards. However, 21 batches of products, including IKEA’s three-drawer drawers, failed to meet this requirement, showing missing or unclear information.
Under the GB 18584-2001 standard, the formaldehyde emission level of wooden furniture should not exceed 1.5mg/L. Yet, four batches of wooden furniture, such as Heming Westwaite’s dining table, exceeded this limit. Additionally, some cabinets, like those produced by Huajun Furniture Factory, were found unstable due to poor design, such as weak partitions and improper fulcrum placement.
With the holiday season approaching, consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing furniture. Checking for proper certifications, clear instructions, and good structural integrity is essential to ensure safety and satisfaction. Always choose reputable brands and verify product compliance with local regulations before making a purchase.
