Introduction: Metal processing online reporters attended the annual meeting of China's steam turbine industry for two consecutive years, in 2011 and 2012. Now, we are summarizing the key issues raised by various experts during those meetings. Some of these problems are specific to certain enterprises, and after discussions, some have been resolved. Others are more general challenges within the industry, and we hope they will draw attention from our tool experts.
At the meeting, Zhao Jianyong, Deputy Chief Engineer at Hangzhou Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. (referred to as Hangzhou Steam Turbine), discussed a critical issue: How can we prevent tools from wearing too quickly when machining the blade root groove? The blade root groove on the rotor is typically a T-shaped groove, and machining the smaller section of this groove presents significant difficulties. For instance, with indexable tools, the wear rate is very high when using water-based cooling, and there is an urgent need to address the rapid carbide tool wear that occurs during small groove machining.
Another challenge mentioned was how to machine molybdenum powder coatings. A 3-meter diameter ring is coated with molybdenum powder, which is not particularly hard. However, when turning it on a vertical lathe, the process is extremely time-consuming and requires a large number of cutting tools. Using diamond blades, for example, may require over 20 blades just to complete one part, making the cost prohibitively high. The question remains: What kind of cutting tool can effectively solve this problem?
Additionally, there was a discussion on the training issue. With new cutting tools being introduced rapidly, the challenge lies in how to use them efficiently. He emphasized that the service and training provided by tool suppliers are more important than the products themselves. Proper support and guidance can significantly enhance productivity and reduce Waste, making it essential for both manufacturers and tool providers to collaborate closely.
These insights highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the industry and the need for continuous innovation and collaboration between engineers, tool suppliers, and manufacturers. By addressing these issues, the steam turbine sector can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain its competitive edge in the global market.
