Four furniture in Guangzhou detected excessive formaldehyde

Furniture purchases are reaching a peak period near the end of the year, with many consumers looking to upgrade their homes. However, this surge in demand has also led to increased scrutiny of product quality. The Guangzhou Industrial and Commercial Bureau recently announced that 24 types of wooden furniture failed quality inspections. Among these, four batches of wooden furniture, including Heming Westwaite dining tables, were found to emit excessive levels of formaldehyde, posing potential health risks. The Guangzhou Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce commissioned the Guangzhou Municipal Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute to conduct a comprehensive quality check on wooden furniture in circulation. A total of 66 samples from 51 manufacturers were tested, resulting in 42 qualified and 24 unqualified batches. This translates to an unqualified rate of 36.36%, with issues primarily related to formaldehyde emissions, product instructions, chair strength, and cabinet stability. Excluding 17 batches with incomplete or incorrect product descriptions, 59 samples were found to be compliant, giving a qualification rate of 89.4%. However, 7 batches failed due to physical quality issues, indicating a defect rate of 10.6%. According to national standard GB 5296.6-2004, furniture manufacturers are required to provide detailed instruction manuals that include model names, usage scope, and applicable standards. Unfortunately, 21 batches of inspected products, including a three-drawer drawer from IKEA (China) Investment Co., Ltd., lacked proper instructions. Furthermore, the national standard GB 18584-2001 sets a limit for formaldehyde emissions from wooden furniture at ≤1.5mg/L. However, four batches of wooden furniture, including the Heming Westwaite dining table, exceeded this limit. In addition, two batches of shoe cabinets, such as those produced by Huajun Furniture Factory, were found to be unstable. The main causes included improperly installed partitions, lightweight structures, and poor design of the fulcrum position. As consumers continue to seek high-quality furniture, it's essential to remain vigilant about product safety and compliance. These findings highlight the importance of thorough quality checks and clear product information to protect both buyers and users. Always ensure that the furniture you purchase meets all necessary safety standards and comes with complete and accurate instructions.
