Tsinghua University School of Materials published a review of graphene in the Review of the Society of Chemistry

On July 5th, Professor Zhu Hongwei's team and collaborators of the School of Materials of Tsinghua University published a long review article “Graphene-Surface Physics and Chemistry” online in the Chemical Society Reviews journal of the Royal Society of Chemicals ( The physics and chemistry of graphene-on-surfaces) systematically summarizes the typical graphene surface interfacial structure, analyzes the interaction of graphene with different surfaces and the dependence of the performance on the surface interface, and then discusses the graphite Potential applications of olefins in photovoltaics, surface catalysis, super-lubrication, coatings, and composites.

Graphene has a unique two-dimensional single-atom layer structure, and its potential mechanical properties, electrical, thermal and optical properties have shown potential applications in many fields. In practical applications, the graphene is always in contact with the substrate to form a surface and an interface. The physical and chemical properties such as the structural characteristics, interaction strength, and defects of these surface interfaces significantly affect the morphology and properties of the graphene, thereby affecting the graphene device. A deep understanding of the interface physicochemistry between the graphene and the substrate is of great significance for the regulation of graphene properties and the optimal design of the device.

Based on the research work of Professor Zhu Hongwei's team in the field of graphene materials for the past ten years, this article combines relevant collaborators (professor Xu Jianbin of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Professor Rodney Ruoff of the National Institute of Ulster, Ulsan, Korea). Prof. Kong Jing of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducted an investigation of the interface between graphene and metals, semiconductors, ceramics, polymers, biomolecules, and liquids, taking the graphene-substrate interface as the starting point. The properties of the graphene device are discussed in detail in terms of interface design and optimization (Fig. 1). The interface-related problems of graphene and substrate are discussed and discussed in detail, and the development trend and prospects of the graphene are prospected.

In recent years, Professor Zhu Hongwei’s team has carried out a lot of research work in the controllable preparation of graphene materials, structural design and their application in energy (solar cells, photoelectric detection, photoelectrocatalysis), environment (water treatment, air purification), and flexible devices. A series of important progresses have been made. The relevant achievements were published in Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, Science Advances, Energy Environmental Science and NPG Asia Materials and other internationally renowned journals. In light of the above academic achievements, this was invited to write a review article in the "Chemical Society Review" and was selected as the cover article (Figure 2).
