R & D can withstand 20,000 volts transistor

A group of researchers from Kyoto University in Japan said on the 23rd that they have developed silicon transistors that can withstand 20,000 volts using silicon carbide as the material. This technology has advanced world standards.

According to reports by Japanese media, the mainstream material of transistors used in equipment such as transformer equipment is silicon, but the maximum voltage that silicon can withstand is only 6,000 volts to 8,000 volts. A team led by Saitama Suga, an associate professor at Kyoto University, synthesized carbon and silicon in proportion to silicon carbide, which is more heat-resistant than silicon. Silicon carbide transistors also have very high power conversion efficiency and can be used to manufacture low-loss power transformers.

Transistors are solid semiconductor devices that can be used for detection, rectification, amplification, switching, voltage regulation, signal modulation, and so on. The transistor's operation is controlled by electrical signals, and its switching speed is very fast, so transistors constitute the main part of the power conversion circuit in various products.

The head of research, Sudachi, said that this is an important step in the development of high-voltage tolerant power conversion circuits.
