Recent data from the U.S. Institute of Fertilizer reveals a significant decline in ammonium phosphate exports during the first 11 months of this year. Diammonium phosphate (DAP) exports fell by 14% compared to the same period last year, while monoammonium phosphate (MAP) exports dropped by 20%. The trend continued into November, with DAP exports plummeting by 75% year-on-year to 141.162 million tons.
In November, the largest shipments of DAP went to Canada, with 53,000 short tons exported, followed by Brazil with 32,000 and Peru with 30,000. Over the first 11 months of 2024, total DAP exports reached 3.17 million short tons, still down 14% compared to 2023. However, some markets saw growth: exports to Brazil rose 65%, Japan increased by 7%, Argentina jumped 113%, and Peru surged 127%. On the other hand, exports to India dropped sharply by 49%, while Mexico and Japan both experienced declines.
For MAP, November exports totaled 98,722,000 short tons, marking a 20% year-on-year decline. Canada remained the top destination with 58,000 tons, while Australia received 30,000 tons. From January to November, total MAP exports amounted to 1.57 million short tons, a 20% decrease from the previous year. Canada saw a 30% drop in imports, but Australia recorded a 35% increase. Brazil and Argentina faced significant declines, while Japan also reported a 7% reduction in imports.
These figures suggest that the U.S. is facing challenges in maintaining its fertilizer export momentum, likely due to shifting global demand, economic conditions, and competition from other producers.
