The confusion of the safety of genetically modified foods

"According to China's understanding of genetically modified products, it has become a worldwide topic. For consumers, the current GM products cannot prove to be harmful in science, but it cannot prove completely beneficial." COFCO Deputy President Dong Zhongxin expressed some views on genetically modified foods to reporters after the kick-off ceremony of the COFCO Fumenmen BEST50 Celebrity Chef Competition on April 8.

For a long time, the safety of genetically modified foods has been widely questioned by scholars at home and abroad. Recently, it was reported that GM rice will soon be commercially piloted in Hubei and Shandong. However, the reporter called the relevant department in real time and did not receive a positive reply. Prior to this, Vice Minister of Agriculture Wei Chaoan once stated that the Ministry of Agriculture has never approved the importation of any kind of GM grain seeds into China for commercial planting, and there is no commercial plantation of genetically modified grain crops in China.

For ecosystems, genetically modified foods are intervened on specific species, and artificially gain competitive advantage in the living environment. This will inevitably destroy the timeliness of natural survival rules, cause changes in ecological balance, and genetically It is impossible for organisms, bacteria, viruses, etc. to enter the environment, save or recover, and it is more serious than chemical or nuclear pollution, and the damage is irreversible.

At present, organic foods seem to be more acceptable to everyone than the market and consumer concerns about the safety of genetically modified foods. Organic food raw materials come from organic agricultural production systems or wild natural products. The use of chemically synthesized pesticides, chemical fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, food additives, etc. is prohibited, and the use of genetic engineering techniques and the products and derivatives thereof are prohibited.

Dong Zhongxin said that the final conclusion of the planting of GM foods in China is not yet available.
