From August 19th to 23rd, the 26th International Conference on High Voltage Science and Technology was held at the Beijing International Convention Center. The 8th Asian High Voltage Science and Technology Conference and the 19th China High Voltage Science and Technology Conference were also held in the same period. Organized by the International Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology, the conference is held every two years. It is the largest and most influential series of academic events in the field of high-pressure science and technology worldwide. Experts and scholars from more than 30 countries including the United States, France, and Germany and representatives from more than 100 research institutions attended the conference. The number of participants was the highest in the past, reaching more than 900 people. Following the 18th International Conference on High Voltage Science and Technology in 2001, the conference was held in China for the second time.
According to the chairman of the conference, Chang Changqing, in recent years, China's high-pressure science and technology research has developed rapidly. Many research results have been at the forefront of the international market. In some directions, they have formed their own characteristics. The extreme conditions represented by high pressure are in the preparation of new materials. There are unique advantages in developing new phenomena and establishing new mechanisms. He said that substances at high pressure have completely different structures and properties from atmospheric pressure, and exhibit extremely rich functional characteristics. For example, soft graphite is converted into hard diamond by high-pressure "point stone into gold", which are all carbon. The non-formal body, the natural diamond that humans first came into contact with is formed in the high pressure state inside the earth. More than half a century ago, scientists invented high-pressure devices and realized the dream of artificially preparing diamonds through high-pressure synthesis.
At present, high pressure can be synthesized and prepared for many new materials that are difficult to develop under conventional conditions, and have been "expressed in the fields of superconductivity, magnetoelectric functional materials, and derivative materials." Many participating experts believe that most of the known physical materials in the universe are in a state of high pressure. With the development of high-pressure science and technology, more and more new materials, new phenomena and new functions are expected to be presented to the world through high pressure.
During the five-day conference, we will focus on the theme of “high-pressure science and technology†and combine the progress of the frontiers to discuss the hot topics such as “metal hydrogen†which is currently concerned by the academic community.
