Breakthrough in preparation of non-metallic carbon-based catalysts

Recently, a paper published in the "German Applied Chemistry" by associate professor Yin Zhen's group of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Tianjin University of Technology was selected as the current hot article. The research team cooperated with Professor Martin's research group of Peking University and Wang Guoxiong's research group of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc. to make breakthrough progress in the preparation of non-metallic carbon-based catalysts and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and successfully obtained sp2 carbon Three-dimensional carbon foam (CF) coexisting with sp3 carbon and doped with nitrogen.

The development of new energy conversion technologies and clean energy is crucial to China's energy supply and environmental protection. Oxygen reduction reaction is an electrode reaction in fuel cells and metal-air batteries, in which the catalyst plays a key role in improving electrode reaction performance and battery performance. However, the research on oxygen reduction catalysts is mainly focused on Pt-based catalysts, which have high cost and severely limit their large-scale applications.

In recent years, carbon-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention as a low-cost and high-efficiency catalyst. However, the current research on the preparation and application of carbon-based catalysts mainly focuses on sp2 carbon, such as graphene. However, due to low catalytic activity, poor high temperature stability and poor conductivity, Sp3 carbon has rarely been reported in terms of catalysis.

The results of the oxygen reduction reaction of Yin Zhen et al. Showed that the three-dimensional carbon foam not only showed excellent catalytic activity, but also had higher peak potential, half-wave potential and Tafel slope than commercial Pt / C catalysts. At the same time, using the three-dimensional carbon foam as a cathode catalyst to assemble a zinc-air electrode, the battery has a power density of up to 222.0 mW cm-2, and shows good stability in performance tests for up to 100 hours.

In addition, they also confirmed through theoretical calculations that the nitrogen atoms at the sp3 carbon and sp2 carbon interfaces have a decisive influence on the ORR performance of carbon materials. This work not only opened up new ideas and methods for the synthesis and catalytic application of carbon materials, but also confirmed that the design and controllable synthesis of carbon materials can be achieved at the molecular level.
