Photovoltaic conversion rate of China Building Materials thin-film solar module sets a new world record

A few days ago, China Building Materials Group's CIGS manufacturer Avancis in Germany announced that its 300mm×300mm CIGS small-scale thin-film solar cell developed at the R&D center in Munich had a photoelectric conversion rate of 17.9%. This technology can be quickly converted into a standard 1 m2 component with a power of 170 Wp.

As a thin-film solar technology developer, Avancis' CIGS thin-film solar cells and cadmium telluride (CdTe) technology have been continuously developed. Photovoltaic module efficiency of Avancis lighting area of 622cm2 reached 17.9%. This technology has set a new record, which is 16.5% more efficient than Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the Chinese giant of Taiwan, and has exceeded the 16% conversion rate of Manz, another high-tech equipment manufacturer in Germany.

Avancis's record of this efficiency-refreshing component will be put into production at the Torgau plant in Germany, mainly by reducing the width of the battery, optimizing the ZnO layer, aluminum front contact and improving laser ablation to reduce the dead zone of the CIGS cell. This CIGS module is suitable for space-constrained applications such as roofing, which was previously dominated by crystalline silicon technology. This technology has been certified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE).
