The surface structure of the glass is a nanometer cone array with a height of 1000 nanometers and a substrate width of 200 nanometers. The researchers used a new manufacturing method for semiconductor coatings and etching techniques. First, several thin film layers were coated on the glass surface, including a photoresist layer, and then continuously etched to produce a conical shape. Because the production process is simple, this structure can be formed on the surface of glass or transparent polymer film without a specific method, which only increases the minimum manufacturing cost. The team has applied for a patent on this production process.

The researchers said that the inspiration for research and development comes from nature's lotus leaf surface structure, the desert beetle carapace, and the moth's eyes. This new type of glass combines multiple functions in one, self-cleaning, anti-fog and anti-reflection. Although microscopic observations show that the nanometer tip array on the glass surface appears to be very fragile, calculations show that they should be able to withstand a wide range of forces, including strong raindrops and direct finger poke. Researchers hope that through inexpensive manufacturing processes, they will be applied to optical devices, smart phones and TV screens, solar panels, car windshields, and even window windows of buildings.

The researchers explained that despite the hydrophobic coating treatment, the surface of the solar photovoltaic panel is still prone to accumulate dust and dirt, and the efficiency loss can reach 40% after 6 months. If this glass is used to manufacture the panel, it can be more effectively waterproofed. , And keep the panel clean longer. In addition, the hydrophobic coating does not prevent reflection loss, and the new material has this advantage. This new type of glass can also be applied to optical devices such as microscopes and cameras and can have anti-reflection and anti-fogging capabilities when working in a humid environment. In touch screen devices, this glass not only eliminates reflection but also resists perspiration. The researchers said that if the cost is reduced enough later, they can be used on a large scale as windshields for vehicles, which can self-clean dirt and grit on the outside surfaces of windows, eliminate glare, enhance visibility, and prevent internal surface fogging.
