The nanomaterial nanocardboard comes out very light

Everyone is familiar with cardboard, this paper product is usually used to make a variety of cartons. The problem with cardboard is that although it is lightweight and has considerable strength, the material is not suitable for many uses. For applications requiring higher strength and durability, a team of engineers from the University of Pennsylvania created a new material called nanocardboard.

Nanocardboard is made of aluminum oxide film and has a thickness of tens of nanometers. The material forms a hollow board with a height of tens of microns, which is a sandwich structure similar to corrugated cardboard, which is the source of the name of Nanocardboard. According to the project engineer, the hardness of the sandwich structure is 10,000 times that of solid plates of the same quality.

For a square centimeter of material, this very lightweight material can reduce the specific weight to less than one thousandth of a gram. Despite its light weight and thin design, the material is elastic and can spring back to its original shape after bending in half. The material's stiffness and weight ratio make it ideal for aerospace and micromechanical applications.

In addition to being thin and light, the mechanical properties of Nanocardboard make it an excellent insulator. Engineers working on the project plan will explore the phenomena found in nano-carbon materials, which can float when light strikes the Nanocardboard. When the surface temperature on each side of the material is different, levitation occurs, and air molecules flow out through the bottom of the Nanocardboard.

The Nanocardboard image under the microscope above shows the unique basket weave pattern of the material. This pattern gives the material some strength and makes it resistant to wrinkles, and is the key to bending resistance. Nanocardboard can bend and recover as if the bending never happened.
